A group of coding standards agreed upon by MPEG (Motion Picture Coding Experts Group) used to encode and compress audio and video sources in a fashion that dramatically reduces the amount of data required to represent them. MPEG-4 is based on many of the same features found in MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, but includes new features that make it ideally suited for producing content for web and CD distribution, as well as some broadcast applications, with file sizes that are significantly smaller than material encoded with MPEG-2, JPEG, or current incarnations of QuickTime.
