As a follow up to our recent Tech Tip on miking drums (see inSync 6/24/99) a Sweetwater employee reminds us of a novel technique for listening to the instrument for microphone placement. The idea is to put your finger in one of your ears so you are listening in mono. Quite often what you hear when listening normally is colored by your stereo perception and the unique directional characteristics of your head and ears. Plugging one ear and pointing the open one at the sound source will give you more of an idea how the microphone may hear it. This is, however, still a rough starting point. The only way to really tell is to move the actual microphone around while listening.
