Using a Mono Overhead Mic

Here’s a tip mentioned by Grammy-winning producer/engineer Jacquire King (Norah Jones, Kings of Leon, Switchfoot, Tom Waits) during his recording seminar at GearFest 2010: consider using a single, mono mic as an overhead for drums rather than the more traditional pair of overhead mics. You’ll get a more focused sound, with fewer phase cancellation issues. You can still get a stereo spread by panning close mics or by using room mics.
