This refers to the specific electronic principle that the microphone uses. So a condenser microphone uses a condenser element, a ribbon microphone uses a ribbon element, an electret uses an electret element, and so on. When the mic element wears or breaks, it can usually be repaired or replaced by a trained technician without requiring the entire microphone be replaced.
