Log Drum

Originally known from an ancient Mexican example, the Aztec teponatzli, which was a long wooden box with a thick vibrating tongue cut in the lid and struck with a beater. More recently, such percussion instruments have appeared in the United States. These are of varying sizes and shapes, often ornately carved and tuned to a specific note, which is voiced when the vibrating tongue is struck by a rubber-ended beater.
