Q: I upgraded to Lion, but now I am getting these strange “Item disabled due to security settings” messages for several things, such as PACESupport, DigidesignLoader, and others. How can I fix this?
A: Note: Messing around in your computer’s system files can cause major problems. If you aren’t sure what you are doing, take your Mac to a qualified tech!
First, we would recommend fixing permissions using the Disk Utility found in the Applications folder.
If that doesn’t solve the problem, make note of what items are having problems. The item names will be displayed in the alert dialogs telling you the items are disabled.
Then, locate those items in the Library folder on your boot drive: Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems
Select the item, get info (either command + i or File > Get Info). At the bottom of the Info window, there will be a Sharing & Permissions section. Open this up and unlock the little padlock at the lower right of the window (this will require an admin log-in and password). Under Sharing & Permissions, choose the following settings:
- “System” should be set to “Read & Write.”
- “Wheel” should be set to “Read only.”
- “Everyone” should be set to “Read only.”
You could also select the StartupItems folder, get info, and change its settings as above. Then select the “gear” drop down menu at the bottom and select “Apply to enclosed items…”
Another Note: Please be sure you know what you are doing before you change any settings in your Mac’s operating system files!
