Linear-Phase EQ

Q: What are the advantages of a linear-phase EQ over a “regular” EQ?

A: Since a linear-phase EQ doesn’t mess with the phase of signals, it doesn’t smear transients or mess with the stereo image. This is important when you are making large cuts or boosts or working on a very narrow frequency range.

A “regular” EQ works fine for tracking and mixdown, and may also sound just fine for mastering or the types of applications such as those described above — your ears should be your guide for when a linear-phase EQ might produce a better result.
