A tip from legendary recording engineer/producer Ken Scott (The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, countless others):
When you’re learning to record or trying to develop an ear for tracking and mixing, limit yourself. Specifically, limit yourself to four tracks. If you need more than that, bounce signals together. This forces you to make decisions about sound quality and levels, and will help develop your ear’s ability to have an aural “picture” of the results you want to achieve before you begin recording.
