An abbreviation for “just a bunch of drives,” JBOD is a mode that can be used with some RAID configurations, where each hard drive in the RAID functions independently – the RAID basically becomes an enclosure containing several separate drives. JBOD does not provide the data security that other RAID types do, since there is no redundant backup, striping, mirroring, or other data protection in use.
