Hyperacusis, also known as hyperacusia, is an abnormally increased acuity of hearing. A form of hearing impairment in which a patient perceives quiet sounds as too quiet and loud sounds as much too loud. In normal hearing, hyperacusis can be caused by damage to the outer hair cells.
