Hard Drive Swap

Q: I have an older dual-G5 Mac, and I am upgrading my studio to a new Mac Pro. Can I just swap the hard drive from the old computer to the new computer to save time?

A: The SATA drive format used in each of those Macs is the same. Any data contained on the drive should show up fine in the new machine.

However, the two computers use different processors, so new versions of any software or the OS should be installed, as what runs on the G5 may or may not run on the Intel processors in the Mac Pro. For this reason, we would recommend installing the drive from the old computer as a second data drive in the new computer, while running the OS and any software you install off the hard drive that came installed in the Mac Pro.
