Hands On: Propellerhead Software Reason 7

With version 7, the Propellerheads have really kicked it up for Reason lovers and for those looking for a highly intuitive music creation program. Reason 7 maintains all of the cool features — the usability, the versatility, the power — and brings us new features that expand Reason’s capability as a DAW. The big news is the new External MIDI Instrument device, which allows Reason to send MIDI out to a hardware synthesizer or sampler — now you can integrate your favorite synths into your Reason-based music! Other big news is busing and subgrouping in the Mixer and easy parallel processing. For me, those two additions make the Reason mixer much more on par with other DAWs. Another powerful new addition is the Audiomatic Retro Transformer, which processes audio to create vintage and retro “flavors” that really impact the sound. You’ll be using this a lot.

Other new features include Audio Quantize, level and pan controls in the Rack, the onboard spectrum analyzer, the expanded Sound Bank, more audio import formats, and dozens more. You’re definitely going to want the Reason 7 update; it turns an already awesome tool into a true powerhouse!
