The DRS2 features a solid-wood, dreadnought body. The top is Sitka spruce, noted for its excellent tonal balance and articulation. The body is sapele, which was chosen for its mahogany-like characteristics. The A-frame bracing is designed for maximum resonance and tone. Clear trebles and warm mids are balanced by lows that really punch through a mix, (think D-18). A sapele top is also available on the Martin DRS1 (we’ve also got the left-hand version).
The multi-laminate Rust Stratabond used to construct the neck of the DRS2 is in keeping with Martin’s pioneering use of sustainable materials in guitar manufacturing. This makes the neck rigid and less prone to warping or moving, which keeps the action and intonation stable regardless of temperature and humidity fluctuations. The neck’s Modified Low Oval shape makes it smooth and easy-playing. The bridge and fretboard are made of Black Richlite, which looks, feels, and performs much like ebony but is ultimately more consistent. These materials are comparable from performance and sonic standpoints to their more traditional wood counterparts and are key to the DRS2’s affordability.
A Fishman Sonitone pickup system gives this guitar no-hassle, plug-and-play capabilities The volume and tone controls are mounted just inside the soundhole for easy access and a low-profile look. A compensated Tusq saddle and hardshell case are the kind of details that really break the DRS2 through the price/performance barrier.
