Gibson Acoustic has added a new member to the round-shouldered-dreadnought family, the J-15. Much like its ancestor the J-45, the J-15 is comfortable to hold, easy to play, and has a rich, full tone that is impressively loud. The J-15 features an L.R. Baggs Element Active Acoustic Pickup System, all American tonewoods, and one of Gibson Acoustic’s lowest price tags.
The Sitka spruce top uses Gibson’s scalloped X-bracing, sitting on walnut back and sides, producing a tone that is clear, punchy, and deep. Hand-sprayed nitrocellulose lacquer allows both the visible and audible beauty of the woods to ring through. The J-15’s maple neck utilizes a compound dovetail joint, which is glued at the 14th fret to the body with traditional hide glue. The walnut fingerboard with rolled edges and short, 25” scale length give this guitar excellent playability. Mini Grover tuners and a Tusq nut and saddle are more details that enhance this guitar’s tone, reliability, and value.
The L.R.Baggs Element Active Acoustic Pickup System is standard on the J-15 and the dynamic range of this pickup is absolutely unrivaled. A flexible film sensor — a mere two-thousandths of an inch thick — is attached inside, directly to the guitar’s top, tracking the soundboard’s actual movement. The results are stunning: silky highs, taut lows, and a balanced, natural acoustic tone are captured and reproduced. Using the least amount of internal components allows for a better translation of the guitar’s tone to the pickup as well. The onboard preamp is hidden inside the soundhole and the barely visible volume control is also removable. When amplified, the range of expressive nuances that this pickup system translates is second-to-none.
Premium American tonewoods, easy playability, and a sleek body shape that says “comfortable” will get you started with the Gibson Acoustic J-15. The awesome tone — acoustically and amplified — will make you stay. All of this comes with the long tradition of superb guitar-making at Gibson Acoustic and a budget-friendly price tag.
