Sometimes expanded to General Standard or sometimes General Sound, this refers to Roland’s GS extension to the General MIDI standard. The GS standard adds 98 tone instruments, 15 percussion instruments, eight drum kits, and three effects to the General MIDI standard, all of which can be controlled via Non-Registered Parameter Numbers (NRPNs). The GS standard is widely supported by music software, but no other hardware manufacturers have adopted it.
