Grot Box

Slang for a small, low-quality studio monitor used to verify the integrity of a mix and to simulate playback on consumer devices such as televisions, radios, and boom boxes. The quintessential “grot box” was the original Auratone 5C (affectionately referred to as “horrortones” or “awfultones.” Since the end of Auratone production, several other manufacturers, such as Avantone, Behringer, Triple P Designs, and others, are making updated (and generally better-fidelity) versions of the original “grot box.”
