Gigabit Ethernet, primarily used in computer networks, supports a maximum data rate of 1000Mbps. At one time, it was believed that these speeds required fiber optic connectivity, but Gigabit Ethernet has now successfully been implemented on CAT 5 and CAT 6 cable. Gigabit is backward compatible for use on slower networks (such as 100-Base T or 10-Base T). Gigabit Ethenet ports can be found on most modern computers, routers, and networking devices.
