Abbreviated “GiB,” and representing a contraction of “giga binary byte,” a gibibyte is 2 to the 30th power bytes – 1,073,741,824 bytes, or 1,024 megabytes. The term differs slightly from “gigabyte,” which represents 10 to 9th power bytes, or 1,000,000,000 – one billion – bytes. The term “gibibyte” has been endorsed by the IEC for use with binary numbers, to differentiate it from “gigabyte,” which the IEC endorses for use with decimal numbers.
