A generic term now used almost universally to describe a certain type of distortion. It probably evolved from the Maestro Fuzz Tone of the 1960s. The effect is quite different from the other type of “desireable” distortion, which is usually referred to as overdrive, and is normally produced by guitar amplifiers set to 10 (or 11 for you Spinal Tap fans).
