Focusrite has released a new generation of their popular Clarett series of USB audio interfaces. The freshly minted Clarett+ interfaces build on the top-notch performance of the previous Clarett range, featuring upgraded specs that result in the best-sounding Claretts yet! The Clarett+ series includes three models that differ primarily according to available I/O. So, whether you’re a home-recording artist or a professional engineer tracking full bands, there’s a Clarett+ for you!
Three New Clarett+ Interfaces
As with the previous Clarett range, the Clarett+ series offers three different units tailored to support specific production environments. The Clarett+ 2Pre is the most compact of the trio and is ideal for small home studios, solo musicians, and content creators. It features two Clarett+ mic preamps, two JFET instrument inputs, four analog outputs, 5-pin MIDI I/O, and an optical in for expanding the number of inputs. Plus, it’s bus powered for on-the-go recording and mixing sessions. Besides the ability to be powered over USB, the Clarett+ 4Pre contains all the same features, but it ups the preamp count to four and adds four additional line outputs, S/PDIF I/O, and a second headphone jack with an independent volume control. The Clarett+ 4Pre works well for recording small ensembles, and electronic-music producers at Sweetwater also enjoy it for live recording multiple sequenced hardware synths. For more advanced project studios and professional applications, you’ll want to check out the Clarett+ 8Pre. This rackmount Clarett+ expands the channel count even further with eight Clarett+ preamps on tap. Additionally, it provides eight analog line outputs, a word-clock output, and front-panel LED meters.
Improved Sonic Capabilities and Analog Performance
Since its initial release in 2015, the Clarett range has continuously improved, and the Clarett+ series is no different. The latest iteration of this highly respected line features some notable updates including improved, independent AD/DA converters and upgraded headphone outputs. The Clarett+ interfaces’ new DA converters serve up an extended dynamic range and heightened sonic clarity. On top of that, a lower noise floor means you’ll get great results even when recording quieter sources.
Includes the Classic AIR Preamp Circuit
At Sweetwater, we were pleased to see that Focusrite carried forward the AIR circuit from previous Clarett iterations. An analog emulation of the Neve-designed Focusrite ISA One mic preamp, the AIR circuit, when engaged, alters the input impedance of the preamp and adds a gently sloping analog filter with a 3dB boost at 24kHz and a -3dB cut at 335Hz. We’ve found that the AIR circuit helps open up vocals; adds sparkle to acoustic guitars, pianos, and cymbals; and gives a hi-fi sheen to synths, drum machines, and other electronic instruments. Additionally, Clarett+ interfaces come with an impressive software package, which includes the Brainworx bx_console Focusrite SC. An emulation of the ISA 110 equalizer module and ISA 130 dynamics module, the Brainworx bx_console Focusrite SC sounds fantastic paired with the AIR circuit.
Conclusion
The Focusrite Clarett+ interfaces present a surprising refresh of an already excellent series of products. When it comes to ease of use and reliability, the Clarett+ interfaces get high marks across the board — and their improved sonics make them a desirable choice for artists at every level.
