Have a precious, irreplaceable DAT/ADAT/DA-88 tape that’s been crinkled?? Looks beyond salvaging? According to Sweetwater’s Master Tech Steve Champion, here’s something you can try as a last resort: Fill a baby food jar (minus the food and label, of course) full of hot water and seal the lid. Remove any water from the outside of the jar. Carefully run the jar along the BACKSIDE of the tape, slowly sliding over the damaged area. This should remove most of the creases – hopefully enough to enable you to play the tape one last time while making a backup transfer to a fresh tape… While we’ve only used this trick on digital tapes, it might be something you could try on analog tape as well.
