A collection of lead sheets, especially common in jazz settings. Originally, fake books were “underground” collections of loose copies of lead sheets, usually illegal copies that infringed on copyright, that were carried by musicians to gigs and jam sessions. Over the years, publishers have begun compiling versions of fake books, which do not infringe on copyright and that can be sold legally.
