A hardware unit that connects to a computer and provides expansion slots and sometimes other capabilities. Expansion chassis began to appear as the number of slots available inside computers were reduced. With today’s computers, many don’t have expansion slots at all, so an expansion chassis provides the means to add slots to those computers. Today’s expansion chassis may also provide additional USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, and more connectivity in addition to expansion slots.
