A preamp tube famously used in 1950s preamp circuits by Vox. Unlike the more popular 12AX7, which is a twin-triode tube, the EF86 is a pentode tube. This characteristic means that it has more gain than each half of a 12AX7, although a circuit that cascades both sides of a 12AX7 can generate more total gain. In general, the EF86 has a smoother, less glassy tone than a 12AX7.
