A guitar tuning in which the lowest guitar string is tuned lower in relation to “standard” tuning. For example, a standard-scale, standard-tuned 6-string guitar with its low E string tuned to D would be in Drop D Tuning. Drop tunings are extremely popular in metal music, often combined with extended range and extended string guitars for easier playing of low and heavy power chords. In musical contrast, drop tunings are also commonly used on acoustic guitars for folk, celtic, and other styles.
