Double the AES Goodness?

Q: I have a digital converter that has “dual-wire” AES connections. What’s the deal with those, should I be using them instead of regular AES for better sound quality?

A: Some manufacturers used dual-wire AES connections (also known as “double-wide” AES) — basically two AES ports used simultaneously to “split” and carry high sample rate digital signals (96kHz, 192kHz, etc.) — because some older AES/EBU driver chips didn’t support high sample rates on a single wire. There is no sonic difference with single- or dual-wire AES connections; it’s purely a matter of the sample rate you’re using and what type of connection your gear supports.
