Hailing from the Detroit area, Daru Jones was raised on a steady diet of soul, gospel, and R&B, with parents employed by the Catholic archdiocese connecting him to an early stint of organ lessons. Hip-hop’s golden age would unfold throughout Daru’s formative high school years, leading him to forge new pathways to connect the seemingly disparate landmarks of the musical map. Prominent emissaries of a multitude of genres would prove critical to the development of his trademark “soulhop” musical approach, including DJ Premier, Michael Jackson, Pete Rock, Chick Corea, Tony Williams, and countless others. With two Grammy Awards, longtime collaboration with the likes of Jack White and the Roots (to name a few), and a genre-melding project out of Vienna under his belt, Daru Jones shows no sign of slowing down. To that end, his signature New Yorker II drum kit from PDP is well deserved, and he stopped by with nephew Quavo Anderson and cousin Eugene McBride to duel it out in fam jam that shows what this deceptively versatile kit can really do.
