A synonym for cutoff frequency. This is the point in a filter where the response is 3dB down in amplitude from the level of the passband. Beyond the cutoff frequency, the filter will attenuate all other frequencies, depending on the design of the filter. On a sweepable shelving EQ or filter, what you are “sweeping” (or changing) is the cutoff frequency. To our ears, this changes the point at which the filter is operating.
