Another name or way to refer to a 4/4 time signature. In written music, Common Time is indicated by a C at the beginning of a staff instead of a 4 over 4. As a side note, the “C” was not derived from the term, “Common Time.” It dates from the period when triple time (a 3/4 time signature) was indicated by a full circle and quadruple time (a 4/4 time signature) was indicated by a broken circle, which evolved into a “C”.
