Coercivity

The measure of tendency of a particle to stay magnetically charged to a given polarity. Coercivity is specifically the intensity of the magnetic field required to reduce a particle’s magnetic orientation to zero, or to reverse its polarity (from south to north or vice versa). All particles on recording media, whether tape or disc, have coercivity values that are taken into account in the design and production of recording devices and media.
