A partial chord that is derived from a larger chord by playing just a few of the notes. For example, “power chords” — a staple among heavy riffing rockers — is a chord fragment consisting of two notes taken from a major or minor chord, the root and the fifth. A jazzer might play the third and seventh from a dominant chord, and so on.
