The beater consists of a shaft that attaches to the pedal and a wood, rubber, felt, metal, resin, or plastic head, which is the part that actually impacts the drumhead. The beater head may be be covered with felt or another material to change the tone of the beater, or it may have different surfaces, which can rotate to strike the head, for different sounds.
