Banjo Mic Split?

Q: I need to mic my banjo for a gig, but we don’t have a lot of gear available. Can I use a mic splitter to route the mic’s output to the mixing board and also to a guitar amp? I want to use the amp as my monitor onstage.

A: You can try it, but you’ll probably have trouble getting enough level out of the guitar amp if you feed it a mic-level signal. In most cases, you’ll have better results if you raise that mic level up to get it to instrument level.

Note: As it turns out, the person asking the question had a small mixer that he was able to press into service to preamp the mic’s output, and to feed the signal to both the house mixer and his guitar amp/monitor.
