Bakelite

This is the first plastic, invented by Leo Hendrik Baekeland in 1907. Leo was trying to formulate an insulator, but invented Bakelite instead. Some very interesting guitars were built using Bakelite from the 1930s to the 1950s. The first was probably the Rickenbacker 1935 Electro Spanish, which had a body molded from Bakelite. It was fittingly dubbed the “electric frying pan.”
