Literally, illuminated from behind.

This term is often associated with liquid crystal displays (LCDs). There is no light produced by an LCD; in order for the display to be visible it must be illuminated by an external light source, often on the side or behind the display. Backlighting can make an LCD much more readable in low light conditions.
