Short for “Audio Units,” a plug-in format developed by Apple for CoreAudio under OS X. Audio Units allows for full two-way communication between the host application and plug-ins, allowing virtual instruments such as soft synths to receive MIDI commands and return audio, or audio processing plug-ins to receive audio from the host and to output processed audio back to the host.
