The abbreviation for audio over Ethernet. This refers to the use of an Ethernet-based network to distribute real-time high-fidelity, low-latency digital audio. AoE replaces bulky snake cables or audio-specific low-voltage wiring with standard networking cabling. This is often hard-wired, such as installed facility wiring, but it can also be used to network a computer and audio interface, for example. AoE provides a reliable backbone for large-scale audio applications such as for large-scale sound reinforcement in stadiums, airports, convention centers, and multiple studios or stages.
