Alternate picking is a guitar technique that consists of alternating between downward and upward picking strokes in continuous succession. This is arguably the most common picking technique. Often the continuous “down-up” or “up-down” motion is maintained even when not picking a note, which allows the musician to keep time with the picking hand.
