Abbreviation for “automatic dialogue replacement” or “additional dialogue recording” depending upon who you talk to. Either way it’s a process most associated with film and video sound work. Basically it is just dubbing or overdubbing, done in addition to, or as a substitution for, captured location sound. Automatic refers to the process known as “looping,” where the desired scene is looped so the actor can repeat the line many times quickly until he or she gets the performance exactly right. Otherwise ADR is somewhat of a mysterious term, but it has a certain appeal as it obscures the fact that dubbing was involved when it appears in the credits of a film. (See also Dubbing Session.)
