Destructive Interference

In physics, interference occurs when two waves superpose to form a new wave. Interference can be constructive or destructive. Constructive interference occurs when the waves are in phase; destructive interference occurs when the two waves are half a cycle (180 degrees) out of phase. Destructive interference is useful for using one wave to cancel out another, such as in active noise cancelling, where a signal with inverted polarity is combined with a source wave to cancel the unwanted sound.
