When a log is sliced to create lumber without being turned, the
majority of the final pieces will be considered “flat sawn.” This tends
to produce less prominent figuring, though if figuring is present, it’s often
in the form of a cloud-like flowing pattern. Some of the famous
1958-1960 Les Pauls had tops which were a combination of quarter sawn
in the center and flat sawn at the edges.
