If you want to define “American” tube tone, start with 6L6 power tubes. These tubes typically provide a generous low end, a punchy yet well-behaved midrange, and glassy highs. Turn up the volume and you’re treated to harmonically rich tones that doggedly retain their high-end character. These tubes work great at all gain levels, but they excel at clean and “in-between” crunch tones.
