A Smaller-bodied Acoustic-electric Guitar from Yamaha

Want a smaller-bodied acoustic-electric guitar with exceptional tone and playability? Check out the Yamaha LS6M. Part of Yamaha's legendary L Series, the LS6M uses a hand-selected solid Engelmann spruce top and mahogany back and sides to give you a rich, warm-sounding guitar with full-range response. The 5-ply mahogany/rosewood neck sports not only a smooth-playing rosewood fingerboard, but also a new, slimmer neck shape and an enhanced fingerboard edge. A passive SRT Zero Impact pickup uses six separate elements to detect each string and give you authentic plugged-in tones. The updated Yamaha LS6M delivers killer tone and playability in a premium acoustic-electric guitar.

Innovative construction to build a better guitar

The great tone and smooth playability of the LS6M are due to Yamaha's never-ending search for perfection. The recently developed A.R.E. (Acoustic Resonance Enhancement) process gives your guitar a broken-in and aged tone. By controlling the atmospheric pressure, temperature, and humidity, the molecular properties of the wood are manipulated to mirror those of a guitar that has been played for years. Each L Series guitar also sports a modified non-scalloped bracing that enhances the guitar's low end. And the 5-ply mahogany/rosewood neck, after re-evaluation of string height and spacing, has a new design for improved playability. The Yamaha LS6M utilizes newly developed advances in guitar construction to bring you an amazingly playable and great-sounding instrument.

Hand-selected spruce top for great tone

Sweetwater knows that the choice of top wood can have a strong effect on the sound of an acoustic guitar. For the LS6M, Yamaha chose a premium, hand-selected solid Engelmann spruce top. Chosen as much for its look as its tone, solid spruce has a well-rounded, articulate sound with excellent projection. Its mahogany back and sides provide exceptional bass and focus. And because it's a solid-wood top, the tone will age gracefully, with enhanced harmonics and greater tonal balance as the years go by. Combine the premium tonewoods with the LS6M's smaller medium jumbo body size, and you've got a guitar that's wonderfully detailed and responsive - ideal for fingerpicking!

A full-range passive pickup system

The passive SRT Zero Impact pickup was designed by Yamaha to deliver a faithful reproduction of the LS6M's natural, dynamic sound. It was also designed to minimize the impact on the guitar's looks and tone. The passive design doesn't use a bulky preamp that's routed into the body to hamper the instrument's look or resonance. Each string has its own piezo element for a full and accurate sound. Because this is a passive pickup system, you'll need to use an external preamp when you want to plug in the Yamaha LS6M.

Yamaha LS6M Acoustic-electric Guitar Features:

  • Innovative guitar design gives you an amazing-playing and sounding instrument
  • Smaller medium jumbo body size is amazingly comfortable and perfect for fingerpicking
  • Hand-selected solid Engelmann spruce top and mahogany back and sides deliver rich tone and projection
  • A.R.E. process molecularly ages the wood to match guitars that have been played for years
  • 5-ply mahogany/rosewood neck has been redesigned for today's guitar player
  • Updated non-scalloped bracing pattern delivers a fuller low end

Pretty Good Guitar
I'll start with the negative: It needs a setup, but honestly it's not too bad out of the box. It has light finish swirls and scratches. Can't tell if it's wiped down during inspection and that causes it, or if it's factory, but that seems to be pretty standard these days unfortunately regardless of the brand. The neck is a little chunky, but not cumbersome. The low end response is okay. Bone nut and saddle would be nice.

The positive: It does have an aged airy tone to it. It rings for days and is resonant. It has surprising volume and the volume across strings is well balanced. Definitely midrangey with the overtones you'd expect from mahogany, and it does come pretty close to sounding like solid wood. The top is a quality piece of wood, and the overall aesthetic does look higher end. Tone wise this has a sweet but fairly powerful voice for its size with more midrange focus response. It has very nice sustain.

I don't think it sounds as good as some $ solid wood Alvarez's, but it does sound better than all the other brands at this price point and can compete with $1,000 guitars. If you're thinking about purchasing one maybe consider that its neck is a little chunky so ya might want to test one out if that might be an issue, but for me it's not. I would recommend this to anyone starting out, looking for a couch guitar or something you can travel with, or even a gigging guitar that you don't have to worry about. Basically I'd recommend it to anyone looking to pickup a great guitar at a affordable price.

Bought this guitar 3 months ago , should you play it you'd likely agree it should be twice the price it is . the guitar did need a new set of elixir strings, but that's ok . this guitar has a fullness to it yet also a sound of feeling which in my thoughts this size guitar should have . I encourage you if you want a nice guitar at this price $500 to purchase it . kerry
Incredible Guitar for the Price!
I am always impressed by what Yamaha is able to produce at the price-points they sell at. The fit & finish of this guitar is nearly perfect. The sound is incredible, and will only improve with age. I have owned several lower-end Yamaha FG and FS series, and this is certainly a step up! Very comfortable to play. I'm already looking for the dread/jumbo size for my next purchase.
Very pleased
I got this to be my full time DADGAD guitar. Its just right for this. Its stout compact body loves singing out rich big open chords or ringing cascading single notes. It has an impressive and articulate sound for such a freshly made guitar-serial number look up says it was made 4 months ago. It is well balanced and feels comfortable. I played it as it came for a few days before changing anything. The fit and finish is great. Tuners are solid and good quality. Fresh premium strings are nice. However, the action was a little high and the neck had some relief (no tension on truss rod) i replaced all the plastic bits with bone and ebony bridge pins (this guitar has a rosewood bridge plate!) Lowered the action and straighted the neck. This took the guitar from good to great. I am looking forward to many years with this guitar and hearing how it matures!
Very satisfied
On Sweetwaters side, the guitar shipped quickly, arrived safely and was even still in tune.

On the guitar, plays wonderful. Action isn't too high or too low. No fret buzz. Everything is clean and well assembled, frets are flush to edges and well polished. Tone is as expected for a concert size guitar. Clear and articulate, light on the bottom end with a really pleasant upper mid range. If you want a heavier, boomy bottom end look for a jumbo or dread but if you want something that doesn't get muddy, cuts through well and is really comfortable to play this yamaha is nice purchase for the price.
