A Compelling Cross Between J and P from Dingwall’s Custom Shop
The Super J model may be Dingwall’s beloved reinvention of the iconic J-style bass, yet this Dingwall Custom Shop Super J strikes closer to the fat, thumping sound of a classic P-style bass thanks to its trio of P Tone pickups. These pickups capture all the depth and warmth of their vintage predecessors, pairing the legendary tone with series/parallel switching and a powerful Rupert Neve Designs preamp. From multi-scale construction that optimizes string tension to the high-performance 7.25–20-inch compound-radius pau ferro fingerboard to the supremely comfortable C-shaped maple neck, the Dingwall Custom Shop Super J defies its vintage roots with Dingwall’s effortless modernized playability. Furthermore, the premium swamp ash body’s Dingwall/Hipshot bridge boosts sustain and ensures seamless string-to-body resonance. You also get a host of signature Dingwall features, including a Quad-Tone rotary selector switch and a state-of-the-art double-expanding truss rod system for easy neck adjustments. Built to the highest standards in Dingwall’s Canadian Custom Shop by a masterful team of luthiers, the Dingwall Custom Shop Super J brings the legendary P-style sound straight into the 21st century.

Packed with P-style panache
Dingwall’s full, fat, and punchy P Tone pickups build upon an all-time classic bass pickup design with cutting-edge Dingwall upgrades and extended switching options. Just like the classic P-style pickups of the past, the P Tone provides you with that sound — the one that’s served as a studio standby since the 1950s for its ability to seamlessly meld into any mix. Moreover, while P-style basses often sport a single split-coil pickup, this Custom Shop Super J packs three P Tone pickups to tackle everything from warm vintage-style thump to biting J-style growl to decidedly modern-sounding 4-string sonics. Lastly, each P Tone pickup sports a dedicated Series/Parallel switch, allowing you to instantly swap between fuller, fatter tones of series to the clear and clarity-packed voice of parallel wiring.

Engineered for long-haul support with multi-scale flexibility
Each entry in the Custom Shop Super J offering features a carefully and meticulously installed double-expanding truss rod. Each installation sees Dingwall luthiers gluing in the truss rod under nearly 1,000 pounds of pressure. This method — taught to them firsthand by Fury Guitars’ Glenn McDougall — bolsters not just the stability of the system, but results in a coupling of steel to wood that vastly enriches the Super J’s sustain and harmonic complexity. The neck features a C-shaped profile that will painlessly accommodate players of countless styles as they navigate its 22 fanned frets. Moreover, its multi-scale 32–34.25-inch design is complemented by a compound 7.25–20-inch fingerboard radius to supply vintage feel in the low position with a flatter feel up high. The strings are bookended by a smooth phenolic nut and a sturdy and stable Hipshot/Dingwall bridge.
About Rupert Neve Designs
For bassists unfamiliar with Rupert Neve Designs, it is the company founded by legendary console designer Rupert Neve. Rupert’s 80 series consoles had a huge, punchy, and authoritative sound that defined ’70s rock. From London to New York to Los Angeles and beyond, top studios installed Neve boards as fast as possible. By 1977, with the introduction of the NECAM automation system, Neve consoles were the main component of the success formula for any recording studio with world-class aspirations. Today, Rupert Neve Designs continues to advance the state of the art with cutting-edge products that sound incredible and intelligently address the challenges of the digital age. Rupert Neve Designs’ bass preamp design for Dingwall Guitars is a game-changer. While the relative merits of various bass preamp designs have traditionally been a bone of contention among discerning players, this formidable preamp puts that debate to rest.

Dingwall Guitars: innovative designs for innovative players
Sheldon Dingwall’s affinity for crafting custom-built guitars dates back to working in his uncle’s workshop during his pre-adolescent years. By age 19, he had formed a record company, after which he toured with his own band. Returning to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1987, he founded Dingwall Guitars with a specific purpose: design and build the most versatile instruments the industry has ever seen. Among the company’s revered achievements are its exquisite electric bass guitars, which are replete with Novax’s Fanned-Fret system, proprietary pickups, innovative electronics, and tailor-made hardware. Appropriately, Dingwall’s artist roster comprises a succession of acclaimed bassists across a gamut of genres, including Leland Sklar, Adam “Nolly” Getgood, Jacob Umansky, Stefan Lessard, Tony Levin, Pete Griffin, Mason Nagy, and Jean-Michel Labadie. Here at Sweetwater, we’re confident that high-caliber players searching for a high-performance axe will find their perfect match in a Dingwall Guitars instrument.
