This Uke Plays Like a Guitar!

Kala's 6-string KA-GL Guitarlele is the perfect crossover instrument for guitar players wanting to play ukulele. You can use the same chords, shapes, and patterns you use on guitar to instantly unlock fresh tones from your staple licks and progressions. Laminated mahogany top, back, and sides impart inspiring visuals and sonics and give this instrument excellent resistance against warping. The mahogany neck and pau ferro fretboard feel fantastic in the hand, and a set of pre-installed Aquila Super Nylgut strings give the KA-GL superior tone, tuning stability, and projection. Enjoy ukulele tone and travel comforts without the learning curve, with the Kala KA-GL Guitarlele from Sweetwater.

The tenor body is the perfect size — not too big, not too small

The tenor ukulele is larger than the traditional soprano. The larger tenor body gives you a louder, deeper tone with more body and richness. It's longer scale length gives your fingers a little more room when playing chords. You'll find — much to your delight — that the Kala KA-GL Guitarlele gives you robust volume for its relatively diminutive size, along with deliciously warm and clear tone. Sweetwater knows that finding a great playing and sounding instrument is important to you, and we're confident that the Kala KA-GL Guitarlele can do the job.

Kala produces expertly-crafted ukeleles

Kala is all about the uke. The company lives and breathes ukulele — ukes are all they make, and they make them exceedingly well. In fact, Kala is in no small part responsible for the strong resurgence of interest in the uke that's been going on since the mid-1990s. They design and manufacture over 120 different models made from a variety of woods, including lacewood, koa, mango, mahogany, flame/spalted maple, bocote, acacia, and the classic spruce top/rosewood back and sides combo.

Kala KA-GL Guitarlele Features:

  • 6-string Guitarlele plays like a guitar with a uke body

Reviews

Very Good For Intended Use
I bought this Kala Guitatrlele as a first instrument for my 2 years old grandson. The size makes it possible for him to hold it like a guitar. I play full size classical guitars as my performing instruments, and plan to begin teaching him from this platform. After two days of tuning, it settled in nicely. Overall quality, tone and intonation are better than expected for the price point. My primary thought is that it will definitely serve the intended purpose.
After playing it for several days, I now believe I can potentially use an instrument like this to add an upper register dimension to my own performances and recordings.
I noted that another reviewer was not satisfied with this instrument's tuning and in-tuned-ness. This was a concern for me as well, until the strings were fully stretched out and the tuners were carefully adjusted. It is a gas to play.

Its a go!
Music background: 54 years, performing, recording, oh and touring but not anymore. (-:
Nice little guitar, GREAT customer service
This little guitar has a decent sound and pretty good volume for being so small. It is nylon string so you have the intonation issues with that - at least I always seem to have with nylon string guitars. Also the short scale could be contributing to that as well. It's like having a little guitar with a capo on the 5th fret. It's great for playing chords/accompaniment. For picking, like doing fingerstyle stuff, not so much - but it is not designed for that. The frets are pretty narrow too, so that can affect how complex chords you can play. So it can't really replace a guitar or be used as a travel guitar for ALL aspects of guitar playing but for a campout sing-along it would really shine.

Note:
I bought this guitarlele a couple of years ago for my daughter, and she lost interest, so it sat in the case in my closet. I got it out recently for another kid, and lo and behold the nut was cracked! All the way down! I've never seen anything like it before even with roughly handled instruments. Anyway, it was out of warranty with Sweetwater, so I contacted Kala and they sent me a new nut right away. You can buy their products with no worries. That's what I call customer service.
Neat little guitar but not high quality
It has a decent little nylon string sound and the guitar itself is finished nicely and attractive. I have the spruce top model. It doesn't stay in tune very well, although every nylon string guitar I have ever had has had issues in that area. It also seems like shorter scale instruments suffer from tuning issues as well. I don't think it's specific to this instrument. It's kind of cool to have a little guitar tuned to the equivalent of a capo on the 4th fret

I bought this guitar for my daughter and after the initial interest, it waned and the guitarlele ended up in my closet in a hardshell case for a while. The next time I got it out, the nut was cracked! I can't imagine what could have happened that could cause that kind of damage inside a case - and not cause any other damage to the surrounding area.

I've played guitar for over 40 years and I've never seen a nut crack before! Especially sitting in a case! It was out of warranty by that time and Sweetwater couldn't help me.

I have contacted Kala and am waiting to see what they will do. I have requested a replacement nut from them which should be a cheap easy fix for them and a show of goodwill. I will update the review after I hear back from them.
