The sounds from my Korg Triton ROM expansion aren’t working. How do I load them into my Triton?
Loading EXB boards in the TRITON Studio
The TRITON Studio has seven expansion slots in which new EXBPCM boards can be installed. The expansion boards’ programs must be loaded into the external (EXT) banks. This tutorial will show you how to load each expansion board to its own bank. Please check the notes towards the bottom of this tutorial if you are loading either EXB-PCM0607 or EXB-PCM03, as they require additional instruction.
1. Install an expansion board into one of the available expansion slots on the top of the TRITON Studio. (As illustrated in the TRITON Studio Parameter Guide, pg 288)
2. Place the disk for the expansion board you’re loading inside the disk drive.
3. Press the DISK button.
Make sure the disk mode is set to “FDD” (Indicates the disk drive as opposed to the internal Hard Drive) on the bottom, if not touch the arrow and using the Inc/Dec buttons, or Rotary dial, and change it to FDD.
4. Touch “Bank C.PCG” on the screen.
5. Touch the arrow in the top right hand corner to pull down the menu.
6. When the menu comes down, Touch “LOAD SELECTED”.
7. At the bottom of the Screen, Touch “ALL”.
8. Turn the rotary dial until ALL says “I-A” to “I-A”.
9. Touch the first “I-A” and using the dial change it “I-C”.
10. Touch the second “I-A” to select an available EXT bank you wish to load to (If this is the first expansion board you’re loading, “E-A” is the first empty EXT bank and will serve our purposes)
11. Touch “OK”.
12. Repeat these steps for any additional expansion boards. Each board you load can go into an available bank of your choice (E-B, E-C, E-D, etc.).
A special note on loading the EXBPCM0607 – PCM0607 comes with two banks of sounds. So both the C bank and D bank PCGs need to be loaded from the disk into separate external banks. Bank C is taken care of in the instructions outlined above. Then bank D needs to be loaded:
1. Start from Step 5, this time however; touch “Bank D.PCG” on the screen.
2. Touch the arrow in the top right hand corner to pull down the menu.
3. When the menu comes down, Touch “LOAD SELECTED”.
4. At the bottom of the Screen, Touch “ALL”.
5. Turn the rotary dial until ALL says “I-A” to “I-A”.
6. Touch the first “I-A” and using the dial change it “I-D”.
7. Touch the second “I-A” to select an available EXT bank you wish to load to.
8. Touch “OK”.
A special note on loading the EXBPCM03 – PCM03 has song/sequencer data in addition to PCG data, so that song data needs to be loaded:
1. After Step 7 in the initial instructions, touch the box marked “Load SNG too” and continue with the remainder of the instructions as normal.
Routing Insert Effects and Individual Outputs – Karma
Karma’s HI synthesis allows for very simple routing of sounds to any of the 4 outputs while in the Sequencer mode or Combination mode. In addition, you can choose whether sounds are routed dry or with insert effects. This tutorial will discuss both processes. Please take the time to read both, as the first section will help pave the way for the second.
Tutorial 1 – Assigning Non-Effected (Dry) signals to individual outs
Let’s route track 1 to the third output (INDIV 1) in the Sequencer mode:
1.Press the SEQ button to enter Sequencer Mode.
2.Press the MENU button.
3.Press the F7 button once to highlight “BUS” on screen.
4.Press the F8 button directly below” Open” on the screen. This will take you to the Insert FX section.
On this screen, you’ll be able to see the routing for the first eight tracks of the sequence. (Tracks 9-16 are under a different tab -F2. Right now, let’s just stay on tracks 1-8). Notice that all tracks are defaulted to “L/R”. This means that all of the tracks are heading for the stereo L Mono & R outputs. Here is where you can change that output destination.
5.Notice that the output routing for track 1 is already selected (Darkened). Using the value slider, wheel or buttons, change “L/R” to “1”. Track 1 will now come out of “INDIV 1”.
6.Repeat for track 2-16 as needed.
Tutorial 2 – Assigning tracks to individual outs with Insert Effects
Insert effects are effects that can be assigned to specified tracks. Much like our previous example, insert effects can be set to output whatever signal is routed to them to individual outs. Let’s assign an effect to Track 1 of a Sequence, then take the effected sound and route it to Individual output 1:
First, let’s get an insert effect assigned in the Sequencer mode:
1.Press the SEQ button to enter Sequencer Mode.
2.Press the MENU button.
3.Press the F7 button twice to highlight “IFX” on screen.
4.Press the F8 button, directly below “Open” on the screen. This will take you to the Insert FX section.
5.Press the F1 button, directly below “Setup” on the screen. This will take you to the IFX setup screen, where you can select desired effects.
Each line of this screen represents a different insert effect. There are a total of five inserts that can be set up,
6.Using the value slider, buttons or dial, select an effect of your choice for “IFX1”.
7.Press the left < cursor button once to highlight the "Off" field
8.Using the value wheel change it to “On”.
Now, we can set tracks to use that effect. Again, let’s use track 1 as our example:
9.Press the F7 “Route” tab. Notice that track 1 is already selected (Darkened) at the bottom of the screen. Using the value slider, wheel or buttons, make a “connection” to insert effect 1 – This will be indicated by a line drawn from “1” to “IFX1”.
Now, we need to route the Insert Effect to the desired output.
10.Press the Setup (F1) tab. You will again see the list of Insert Effects being used.
11.IFX1 is still selected since we were working with it before. From here, press the right > cursor button until you have selected “L/R” on the screen. This is the “BUS Select” as indicated at the top right hand side of the screen.
12.Much like in our previous example, using the value wheel or the Inc or Dec buttons, select “1” which sends the effect, and the programs it is being used on, to output “INDIV 1”.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each insert effect you wish to route to an output.
NOTE: Most of the Insert effects are stereo, this in mind, you can keep the effects stereo by selecting a dual output routing. In other words, in addition to choices like “1” and “2” there is also a paired choice; “1/2”, which allows the sound to come out of two outputs. This is a stereo pair, and will keep stereo effects intact.
