Roland SPD-SX: Firmware Update

How to update the firmware on a Roland SPD-SX

In this guide, we will show you how to perform a firmware update on the Roland SPD-SX. Follow the instructions below to get started.

  1. Check the firmware version number
  2. Perform the firmware update

Check the firmware version number

SPD-SX firmware updates often add new features and bug fixes to the device’s internal software. You may need to perform a firmware update if you’re running into issues and need to reload the system’s software. Before performing a firmware update, check which firmware version you’re currently running and compare it to the latest System Program listed on the SPD-SX download page. Follow these steps to check the firmware version.

  1. Press MENU, select UTIL and then press ENTER.
  2. Use the DOWN cursor button to navigate to INFORMATION and press enter. The firmware version will be listed as VERSION : 1.0x

Perform the firmware update

Once you confirm that the SPD-SX requires updating, you can begin the update process. You’ll need to connect the USB thumb drive to your computer, download the System Program file on the SPD-SX download page, and then perform the update.

  1. Connect the USB thumb drive to your computer, and download the latest System Program file.
  2. Extract the .zip file, open the spdsx_sys_v10x folder, then copy and paste only the _BOOTPREG.ES_ to the USB thumb drive. Do not copy the entire folder to the thumb drive.
  3. Turn off the SPD-SX and then connect the USB thumb drive.
  4. Hold ALL SOUND OFF, QUICK, and EXIT while pressing the POWER button. Continue pressing the POWER button until the ** SPD-SX UPDATER ** screen appears.
  5. Once the firmware update is complete, turn the SPD-SX off and back on.
