How do I perform self-diagnostics on the Kurzweil K1000?

Warning – the RAM test will erase the K1000’s memory and will delete all of the program changes you have made, including the master parameter and control settings.

Also – Set the volume to minimum; The sound ROM test generates full-volume waveforms which can damage your audio system.

To enter self-diagnostic mode, turn the K1000 off. Connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN. Hold the C and PLAY/EDIT buttons while turning the unit on.

The display will show:

KDIAGS MAIN MENU
>BURN IN

Press the PROGRAM UP button and it will display:

KDIAGS MAIN MENU
>RUN ALL

Press YES and the display will read:

NUMBER OF PASSES
> 1

Press YES again to begin the process. The display will test:

Program ROM test
Setup ROM test
RAM test
Battery backup test
Timer test
UART test
VLSI 1 test
VLSI 2 test
Sound ROM test
One sample test

Eventually you will see a display for the sine wave test:

SINE WAVE
Step 1 1000 Hz

Press any button to step through the sine wave test’s 11 steps or press NO to skip to the next test, the LCD test, which runs automatically. When it’s finished, the button test begins.

Pressing each button in turn should display the button’s function. Press NO twice to exit. When finished, it will display:

PASSES>00001
ERRORS>00000

If the ERRORS displays anything other than 00000, you may need to have it serviced.

NOTE: if you do not connect the MIDI cable connection loop, it will display at least one failure and will generate a number of errors.

After displaying the test results, the K1000 will return to the >BURN IN display. Press PROGRAM DOWN and the display will read:

KDIAGS MAIN MENU
>EXIT

Press YES to return to play mode.
