How to Update the Firmware on a Moog Mother-32

In this guide, we will show you how to update the firmware on a Moog Mother 32. Follow the instructions below to get started.
Before you start
To perform this Mother-32 Firmware Update you’ll need the following:
- A Desktop or Laptop computer with Internet Access.
- The Mother-32 v2.0 Firmware download. (See links below.)
- A USB to 5-Pin Din MIDI Interface (USB to computer, 5-pin Din MIDI Out to Mother-32).
- One MIDI Cable long enough to go between the Interface and the Mother-32.
- One USB Cable long enough to go from the Interface to the Computer.
- A SysEx Librarian app, such as SysEx Librarian for Mac or MIDIOx for PC.
Download Moog Mother-32 firmware files
- Download Mother-32 v2.0 Firmware on Moog’s Mother-32 web page.
- While you’re there, be sure to also get the Mother-32 Manual, Mother-32 Blank Patch Sheets, Moog House of Electronicus Patch Book, and the Mother-32 v2.0 Manual Addendum.
- After you get to this page, click on the “Downloads” link and download all five items to your computer.
- Unzip the Mother-32_v2_0_Update.zip (if needed), you’ll have a folder called “Mother-32 v2.0.0”

Install the Moog Mother-32 firmware
- Turn the unit on and connect it to a MIDI port to your interface, and the MIDI interface connected to the computer via USB. Power up your computer if you haven’t already done so.
- Launch the SysEx Librarian. Make sure to set it so that it’s talking to the USB MIDI Interface.
- Use the SysEx app to open the file called “Mother-32_ERASE_firmware.syx”.
- Press Play on the app and watch the Mother-32’s TEMPO LED flash green & red.
- Press Play again on the app to transmit the ERASE file a second time.
- You will see two red blinks and the it will flash green & red again. This means the old firmware is erased and ready for the new firmware.
- Use the SysEx app to open the file called “Mother 32_Firmware_v2_0_0.syx”.
- Press Play on the app and watch the Mother-32’s MIDI LED flash red and the TEMPO LED flash yellow.
- When finished, the TEMPO LED will flash a few times and then the Mother-32 will reboot normally.
A note for updating the Moog Mother-32 firmware on Windows
If you’re a Windows user and you receive a “No more memory” error, you will need to lower the buffer size in MIDI-OX from 256 to 128. Follow these steps to adjust the sample rate in MIDI-OX.
- Navigate to Options at the top of the window.
- Click Configure Buffers… and set both the Input and Output values to 128.
