Installing ATA / IDE hard drives into Blue G3’s and G4’s
Caution: It is always recommended that any hardware modifications be performed by a factory authorized service center. User installation may void warranty in some cases. Please read your owners manual or documentation for more information.
1. Make sure the computer is turned OFF, but leave the power plugged in. Open the G4 or (blue) G3’s side door. Touch a metal wall or panel inside the computer to release any static electricity. Avoid shuffling your feet (you can generate static this way).
2. Locate ATA drive which is built into the Mac. It is mounted on the “floor” inside the Mac
3. Gently disconnect the IDE ribbon cable & power supply cable from the “built-in” ATA drive.
4. A single phillips head screw holds the “built-in” drive to the floor of the Mac. It is located just below the IDE ribbon cable connection on the drive. Remove this screw, and pull the HD (and it’s mount) out of the Mac.
5. Remove your “new” ATA hard drive from its packaging. Check the Jumper settings – usually documented right on the drive itself. Set the drive to be the IDE “slave”.
* The Glyph / Seagate drives sold by Sweetwater have one black jumper installed. Simple REMOVE that jumper completely.
6. Your G4 / Blue G3’s Accessory Kit (small box which the Mouse, Keyboard, CD’s, etc. come in) comes with a small bag of 4 or 5 screws. Use these screws to mount the ‘new’ drive on top of the the ‘built-in’ drive with the brackets provided.
7. Remount the Hard drives inside the Mac with the single mounting screw.
8. Attach the power supply connection to each drive, AND the IDE ribbon cables to each drive
Once the new ATA hard drive has been properly installed, you may boot your computer. The new ATA drive will need to be initialized before use.
1. Locate the Drive Setup folder in the Utilities folder of your Macintosh HD. Launch Drive setup.
2. In the Drive Setup window, click once the the drive listed as “
Then click the “Initialize…” Button.
3. An Initialize warning will appear “Initializing will destroy all data on the following volumes”. Verify that the “
4. A new HD icon named “Untitled” will appear below the Macintosh HD icon. You may Quit drive setup.
5. you can rename the “untitled” ATA drive by simply clicking once on the name “untitled”. After about one second, the name will be highlighted. Type in a new name (eg: “Audio”)
* When creating new projects, sequences, or sessions, always save them to this new ATA drive.
